Red Star Belgrade 1-2 Benfica: Turkish delight for visitors

Turkish duo combine to earn Benfica vital win in Serbia

Former Manchester City youngster Enes Akturkoglu and Holland youth international Neres Kokcu combined for the second time this season to give Benfica all three points in a hard fought contest against Red Star Belgrade.

Akturkoglu's early strike cancelled out by Ivanic

Akturkoglu broke the deadlock early on, dispossessing Aleksandar Dragovic on the edge of the box and slotting home into the bottom corner. However, Red Star Belgrade drew level just before the break, with former Liverpool defender Dejan Lovren's pin-point long pass finding the unmarked Milan Ivanic, who made no mistake with the finish.

Kokcu's stunning winner gives Benfica the win

The second half was a cagey affair, with both sides struggling to create clear-cut chances. However, with just over 20 minutes remaining, Kokcu produced a moment of magic to win the game for Benfica. The Dutch midfielder picked up the ball on the left wing, cut inside and unleashed a stunning strike into the top corner.

Benfica now top of their Champions League group

The win takes Benfica to the top of Group H, with two wins and a draw from their opening three games. Red Star Belgrade, meanwhile, are bottom of the group with three defeats from three.

What's next?

Benfica will be looking to continue their good form when they travel to Pacos Ferreira in the Primeira Liga on Saturday. Red Star Belgrade, meanwhile, will be hoping to bounce back when they host Vojvodina in the Serbian SuperLiga on Sunday.
